Linen and modal blends are your best bet.
Cotton jersey and loose-weave linens give you coverage that actually breathes. Polyester blends look sleek but trap heat — and when you’re already sweating in the sun, that’s the last thing you need.
Look for tunics or kaftans in linen, modal, or a cotton-modal blend. These fabrics drape well without clinging, and they wick moisture better than pure cotton. Avoid anything with a tight weave or spandex lining unless it’s specifically designed for swim (most aren’t).
A few good cuts: A-line tank dress, open-front cardigan, or a short-sleeved caftan with side slits. These let air move while covering what you want covered.
If you find a hoodie-style cover-up in terry cloth, that works too — just make sure it’s loose, not fitted. Sweatshirt material gets heavy when wet.
Don’t overthink it: you want coverage and airflow. That means natural fibers or performance fabrics that feel like air.
