How did Alela Diane get her start in music?

Diane was invited by Joanna Newsom, also from Nevada City, to make her first solo public appearances. She then played with the Nevada City band Black Bear before launching her solo career. The Pirate’s Gospel was later picked up by Rough Trade Shops in the UK, who named it their Album of the Year.
