How did the album cover come about?

The Afro-futurist cover painting was created by German artist Mati Klarwein. Columbia Records accepted Miles’s vision for the packaging despite its unconventional nature, and the label actively promoted the double LP — Miles’s first — to a new, youthful audience that was discovering jazz through rock channels.
