How did the band form from the ashes of other Seattle bands?

Following the disbanding of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard’s previous band Mother Love Bone — whose frontman Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990 — the two musicians began jamming with guitarist Mike McCready. They sent an instrumental demo to San Diego surfer Eddie Vedder, who wrote and recorded vocals over it, and Pearl Jam was born.
