The White Album was a deliberate step back from Sgt. Pepper's layered production

Rather than layering individually overdubbed parts the way they did on Sgt. Pepper, many White Album sessions were recorded as group performances with a live lead vocal onto four-track and eight-track tape. It’s a much rawer approach.
