How does Mezzanine differ from Massive Attack’s earlier work?
Mezzanine represented a dramatic shift from the jazzy, laid-back trip-hop sound of Blue Lines and Protection. It drew heavily on post-punk, shoegaze, and dark electronic textures, with heavy use of guitar samples, distortion, and brooding atmospherics. Del Naja described it as “that place in between, when you’re not sure if it’s yesterday or today.”
