Ys takes its name from a mythical Breton city swallowed by the sea

The album is named after the mythical city of Ys, which according to Breton legend was built on the coast of Brittany and later swallowed by the ocean. Newsom chose the title after dreaming of the letters Y and S — and it fits the album’s otherworldly, ancient-modern tension perfectly.
