What role did the Mellotron play in creating the album’s sound?
Ian McDonald spent countless hours overdubbing layers of Mellotron and various woodwind and reed instruments to achieve the album’s characteristic lush, orchestral sound. In some cases, the band went through five tape generations to attain the deeply layered, segued tracks that defined the record.
