Five tape generations built the sound of In the Court of the Crimson King

Ian McDonald overdubbed layers of Mellotron, woodwinds, and reeds to achieve In the Court of the Crimson King’s lush, orchestral sound. In some cases, the band went through five tape generations to get the deeply layered tracks that defined the record.
