What was Benny Golson’s role and why was this album special for him?

Tenor saxophonist Benny Golson served as musical director and composed four of the six tracks: ‘Are You Real?,’ ‘Along Came Betty,’ ‘Blues March,’ and ‘The Drum Thunder Suite.’ This was the only U.S. album on which Golson appeared with the Jazz Messengers, making it a unique document of his brief but impactful tenure with the group.
