Beethoven couldn't hear the applause at his own Ninth Symphony premiere

The symphony premiered on May 7, 1824, at the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna. Beethoven, who was completely deaf by this time, reportedly had to be turned around by a performer to see the audience’s enthusiastic applause.
