Who composed the title track ‘Moanin’’ and how did it become the album’s name?
The title track was composed by 22-year-old pianist Bobby Timmons. The album was originally self-titled, but the instant popularity of this bluesy opening track led to it becoming known as Moanin’. The call-and-response structure between Timmons’s piano and the horns became one of hard bop’s most iconic moments.
