Why did Radiohead change their sound so dramatically for Kid A?

After the stress of promoting OK Computer, songwriter Thom Yorke wanted to diverge from rock music entirely. The band drew influence from electronic music, ambient, krautrock, jazz, and 20th-century classical music. Yorke experienced writer’s block and began cutting up words and phrases, assembling them at random to create abstract lyrics.
