Why did the Rolling Stones record in France?
The Rolling Stones became tax exiles from Britain in 1971 after spending the money they owed in taxes. They fled before the government could seize their assets, with Jagger settling in Paris and Richards renting Nellcôte in Villefranche-sur-Mer near Nice. The other members settled in the south of France, and recording began in Nellcôte’s basement out of necessity.
