Why was the international release of 1999 different from the US version?

Warner’s international arm WEA opposed a double LP, deeming it too much product for Prince’s potential audience. So when released in the UK on March 7, 1983, 1999 was pared down to a seven-track single LP, with D.M.S.R., All The Critics Love U In New York, and International Lover omitted.
