Why were the Astral Weeks recording sessions considered unusual?

Morrison called the sessions ‘uncanny’ and described them as ‘an alchemical kind of situation.’ The album was recorded in just three sessions — September 25, October 1, and October 15, 1968 — at Century Sound Studios in New York. The jazz musicians who played on it had never rehearsed with Morrison, yet the performances achieved a remarkable spontaneity and emotional depth.
