Yes, there are clear signs. Your pool pump motor will usually tell you it’s dying before it actually quits.
Grinding or screeching noises are the big one. That’s the bearings failing. A hum without the pump moving water means the start capacitor is toast or the motor is seized. If the breaker trips every time the pump kicks on, the motor is drawing too much current—that’s internal damage.
Also check for leaks around the shaft seal. A little drip is normal, but a steady stream means the seal is gone and water is getting into the motor windings. That kills it fast.
If you catch these early, you can often just replace the bearings or capacitor. But if the motor is more than 5–7 years old, just swap the whole pump. Future you will thank present you during the next heat wave.
