‘Little Red Rooster’ from Love You Live: Mick Taylor’s Rare Slide Solo
The track is “Little Red Rooster,” the Willie Dixon cover that the Stones had taken to #1 in the UK back in 1964. On the 1977 live double album Love You Live, it appears on side three, recorded during the band’s legendary club date at the El Mocambo in Toronto, March 1977.
What makes this version a collector’s obsession: Mick Taylor, who had quit the Stones in late 1974, came back to play slide guitar on a handful of those Toronto shows. His solo here is one of the last times he played onstage with the band, and it’s a greasier, more fluid take than the original 1964 single—proof that the Taylor-era chemistry hadn’t fully rusted off even after two years.
