Live 8 2005: The Last Time All Four Surviving Pink Floyd Members Played Together

July 2, 2005, was the last night the four living members of Pink Floyd—David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright—shared a stage. They reunited for the Live 8 benefit concert in London’s Hyde Park, a surprise to everyone including the band. Waters had left the group 20 years earlier, and the tension between him and Gilmour was well known, but they set aside differences for Bob Geldof’s anti-poverty cause.

The setlist was a tight four songs: “Speak to Me/Breathe,” “Money,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Comfortably Numb.” They skipped “Time” and “Us and Them,” but the performance of “Comfortably Numb” hit especially hard—Waters sang his verses, then Gilmour took over the solos, and the crowd of 200,000 went quiet. It felt like a real reconciliation, but it turned out to be the end. Richard Wright died in 2008, and while Gilmour and Waters have played together on occasion since, the four-piece lineup never performed again.
