Live "Stairway" is a different song.

It’s almost a different song. The studio recording is a meticulously layered construction—multiple guitar tracks from Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones on Mellotron, Bonham’s famous drum sound from the Echo Chamber at Headley Grange. Live, they had to strip it down. Page switched to a double-neck Gibson to cover the acoustic and electric parts in one go. Plant couldn’t reliably hit those high notes after 1971, so he’d improvise, often reimagining the entire vocal melody. The solo was extended, sometimes way too long, and the whole thing felt looser, rougher, and more like a jam.
