Look up the CPU, not the laptop spec sheet.

Manufacturer specs for max RAM are often conservative — especially with partially soldered memory. They’re usually quoting what they tested, not what’s actually possible.

The real limit is your CPU’s memory controller, not the laptop model. Find your exact processor on Intel Ark or AMD’s product page (just Google the model number). That’ll show the theoretical max. Then check if the empty slot (if any) supports common high-density sticks like 16GB or 32GB.

The trick: many laptops with 8GB soldered + one slot will happily take a 32GB stick for 40GB total, even though the spec sheet says 16GB or 24GB. The catch is BIOS support — some manufacturers limit it via firmware. That’s where forums (Reddit, NotebookReview) come in. Search your exact model and “max RAM” — you’ll find real-world tests from people who already tried.

If you’re unsure, buy from somewhere with a good return policy. A $40 upgrade is worth the research.
