Loosen the chain tension before winter storage — cold makes the bar and chain contract, and that can pull an already tight chain too tight.

That contraction isn’t just a theory. Adjust your chain at 70°F in the fall, then leave it in an unheated garage in January, and the metal shrinks enough to add real tension. Combined with the tension you already set for cutting, you’re putting unnecessary stress on the bar, the chain, and the saw’s clutch side.

Also, months of sitting under full tension just wears everything out for no reason. A chain doesn’t need to hold cutting tension while it’s sleeping.

Loosen the adjuster so the chain is snug but has a little sag — enough that you can pull it slightly off the bar — then lock it down. It won’t fall off, and it won’t damage anything.

A tightened chain is for cutting, not for storage. Loosen it now and thank yourself in spring.
