Lounger wins for actual sunbathing

A pool lounger is better for sunbathing, because it supports your head and back while you actually lie still.

Something worth knowing: “pool float” is the big category. It covers rings, rafts, noodles, all of it. A lounger is a specific kind of float—usually an inflatable chair shape with a built-in backrest, sometimes armrests. It keeps you in a reclined position, mostly out of the water behind you, with your legs floating out front.

That makes loungers the obvious choice for sunbathing. You can lay back, close your eyes, read, or hold a drink without fighting to keep your head above water. A flat raft, by contrast, puts you completely horizontal. You’re closer to the water, your head has no support, and small waves end up in your face more often. Loungers just let you relax and soak in the sun without working for it.

If your goal is drifting around the pool like a lazy piece of driftwood, a basic float is fine. If your goal is actually lying out and getting some sun, get the lounger.
