Lower the bar, but don't drop it.
The best strategy is to drop your standards to the absolute minimum — just do one tiny version of each habit.
When you’re traveling or on holiday, your normal environment, cues, and time blocks all disappear. Trying to maintain a full workout routine, a 20-minute meditation, or a detailed journal entry will just stress you out and probably fail. So don’t try.
Instead, decide before you leave what the “floor” is for each habit. For exercise, it’s five pushups or a short walk. For reading, it’s one page. For journaling, it’s one sentence. No judgment if that’s all you do. The point isn’t the progress — it’s keeping the streak alive and the identity intact. You’re still someone who does the thing, even if only barely.
I also recommend using a separate, stripped-down tracker for travel. Don’t try to cram your normal tracking system into a different context. Just mark an X on a simple paper list or a single note in your phone. The lower the friction, the more likely you are to do it.
Future you will have a much easier time restarting if you come back with a chain unbroken, even if every link is tiny.
A terrible workout beats no workout, and a half-assed streak keeps the engine running.
