Lunch is just five slots to fill, not a menu
A balanced lunch box doesn’t need dairy or nuts—it needs a protein, a carb, a fruit or veg, a drink, and a treat, and there are easy swaps for every one.
For protein, swap nut butter for sunflower seed butter or soy nut butter. Or skip the butter entirely: eggs, chicken slices, beans, hummus (if sesame is fine), and tofu all work. For dairy, the easiest move is to just not include it. Kids don’t need cow’s milk at every meal. Use avocado slices, coconut yogurt, or a dairy-free cheese if you want the texture, but a plain sandwich with meat and veggies is already fine.
The real gotcha is hidden allergens. Check labels for “may contain” and cross-contamination warnings, especially on granola bars and baked snacks. For a treat, go with fruit, fruit leather, or a packaged snack that’s specifically nut-free and dairy-free. Once you have a few safe brands, you stop thinking about it.
Build from the same five slots every day and you’re done. Your kid gets variety without you having to invent something new each morning.
