MacBook Air is okay for a 4K monitor — if you’re not pushing it hard.
It works, but the fanless design means it throttles under sustained load.
The M1, M2, and M3 Airs all support one external display at up to 6K 60Hz. For everyday stuff — browsing, writing, coding, even light photo editing — it’s totally fine. The screen won’t stutter or lag. You’ll notice no difference from a MacBook Pro in those tasks.
The problem is heat. Without a fan, the chip has to slow down if you push it hard for more than a few minutes. Running a 4K monitor plus demanding apps like Final Cut, Lightroom, or a dozen Chrome tabs with video calls? The Air will get warm and start throttling. Performance will drop noticeably compared to a Pro with active cooling. Also, if you only have 8GB of RAM, that external display eats into memory — expect swapping and slowdowns
