Match your pump to your pipe size, not your pool volume.

This is one of those things where bigger is not better.

Most pool pump sizing guides start with pool volume: figure out your gallon count, then pick a pump that can turn over the water in 8 hours. That’s a fine starting point, but it ignores the real bottleneck—your plumbing diameter. A 1.5-horsepower pump pushing water through 1.5-inch pipes creates too much friction, wastes electricity, and can even damage your equipment.
