Modern laptops that ship with one soldered module and one SO-DIMM slot are designed for this. The memory controller treats them as a single dual-channel pair if they’re identical enough. “Match” means: same DDR generation (DDR4 vs DDR5), same speed (e.g., 3200 MT/s), same CAS latency, and ideally same rank (single vs dual rank). Different capacities can work in partial dual-channel (Intel Flex Mode or AMD asynchronous mode), but for true symmetric dual-channel you want equal sizes.
