Measure the mini-fridge before you buy the lunch box

You should pick a soft-sided lunch bag that clears the inside of your work mini-fridge by at least an inch, so grab a tape measure first.

Standard mini-fridges aren’t really standard on the inside. The freezer compartment eats a few inches of height, and there’s often a compressor hump in the back that cuts into depth. That means a hard-sided lunch box might look like it fits on paper but then jam against that hump or the door shelf. A soft bag gives you a little give, so it’s the safer choice.

Measure the actual usable space — not the outside of the fridge. Check the floor space or the bottom shelf, and include the clearance you need to slide the bag in and out. Most common 12-can soft bags are about 11 inches tall, 9 inches wide, and 7-8 inches deep. That fits most mini-fridges. But don’t trust “fits a 12-can” marketing. Trust the numbers on the product listing.

And when you’re comparing dimensions, knock another half-inch to an inch off each side. You’re not aiming for a perfect fit; you’re aiming for “easy in, easy out” every morning.

So grab a tape measure, look for a soft bag an inch or two smaller in each direction, and you’re done. Future you will be happy you didn’t buy that hard cooler you’d have to wrestle in.
