Metal blade box fans aren't really better

Metal blade box fans are not inherently better than plastic ones for most people. If anything, plastic is the smarter choice for typical home use.

Plastic blades are lighter, quieter, and cheaper. Box fans sit on floors or windowsills, so weight matters less, but noise matters a lot. Plastic flexes slightly and absorbs vibration, which means they hum less. Metal blades are stiffer and can ring like a bell if the motor isn’t perfectly balanced. You’ll hear that.

Durability is the main argument for metal. Plastic blades can warp from heat or sun exposure over years, or crack if you drop the fan. Metal won’t do that, but it can rust if you use it in a damp basement or garage. Unless you’re running the fan 24/7 in a hot attic or a workshop where you might knock it over, plastic will last long enough.
