Metal bridges are worse than stone paths when wet.
Yes, they’re both slippery, but metal is the bigger problem. Stone paths usually have some texture or grit that gives you a little bite. Metal bridges—especially cast iron or steel grating—can turn into an ice rink with just a light drizzle. The combination of water + polished metal + sometimes moss or algae is nasty.
What footwear to avoid: anything with a smooth sole. Leather soles, cheap dress shoes, some fashion sneakers with no tread. Also avoid those minimalist “barefoot” shoes with zero grip. You want rubber soles with deep lugs or siping. Vibram, which is mostly overpriced, actually matters here. If you’re walking a wet metal bridge, flip-flops are a bad idea too—they flap and offer no traction.
If you have to cross one, walk slowly, take short steps, and keep your weight over your feet. That’s the real trick—don’t lean into the slip.
