Mixing RAM brands is a gamble

Yes, even with identical specs, mixing RAM brands can cause instability.
The specs on the box—speed, timings, voltage—are just the headline. The actual memory chips inside can be different (Samsung, Micron, Hynix, etc.), and each has its own quirks. The motherboard’s memory controller has to train all sticks to work together. If the chips respond differently to voltage or have slightly different internal timings, you’ll get crashes, boot loops, or random blue screens.
It often works fine. But when it doesn’t, troubleshooting is a nightmare because everything looks compatible on paper. You’ll spend hours swapping sticks, resetting BIOS, and adjusting voltages.
A matched kit is tested together and guaranteed to play nice. The extra $20 is insurance.
Save yourself the headache and buy a kit.
