Here’s the deal: most laptops with soldered RAM have only one accessible slot. When you add a stick, the system treats the soldered module and the stick as two separate channels that can’t interleave properly. Even if they match in speed and capacity, many modern laptops just give up on dual-channel entirely when mixing types. Some might run “flex” mode (partial dual), but don’t count on it.

The performance hit is real but not catastrophic. You lose about 5-15% in memory-bound tasks like gaming or video editing. For web browsing, email, or Office work, you won’t notice.

It’s fine for everyday use, but don’t expect gaming performance gains.
