Moisture is the whole trick with sticky rice
Sticky rice dries out in lunch boxes because it loses moisture fast, so the fix is to add moisture back when you reheat it.
The packing part is easy: put it in an airtight container while it’s still warm, and don’t leave it sitting open on the counter. If you’re packing it with a saucy dish, keep the sauce separate so it doesn’t make the rice soggy, but if you want, you can drizzle a teaspoon of water over the rice before sealing—that helps.
When it’s time to eat, don’t just nuke it dry. Sprinkle a little water over the rice, cover the container with a damp paper towel (or a microwave-safe lid), and heat in 30–45 second bursts. The trapped steam rehydrates the grains. If you have a steamer, even better—that’s how it was meant to be reheated.
Sticky rice goes hard and chalky when cold, so this isn’t optional. Do the damp paper towel thing and it’ll taste like it’s fresh.
