Mold Hates a Dry Lunch Box

Removable liners are easier to machine wash, but the real mold killer in any lunch box is drying it completely before closing it up.

For a removable liner: pull it out, shake crumbs loose, and wash it as directed — usually a gentle cycle or hand wash with soap and warm water. The advantage is you can let it dry flat separately. But don’t put it back while it’s still damp. That’s how mold starts.

For a one-piece insulated bag: do not fill it with water. The insulation can trap moisture inside and make it worse. Wipe the inside with warm soapy water or a 50/50 vinegar and water mix. Then wipe it dry with a towel and leave the bag open for a few hours. Sunlight helps too.

The cleaner itself almost doesn’t matter. A fully dry lunch box is what keeps mold from growing. So get in the habit of wiping and airing it out every day, even if it looks clean.

A damp box is a mold farm. A dry box is just a box.
