For optimal performance, clean the blades and grille of your box fan about once a month when you’re using it regularly.

Dust builds up fast on those blades. Even a light coating messes with the aerodynamics — the fan moves less air and has to work harder. You’ll notice it starts to hum louder and push less breeze. That’s your sign it’s time.

If you use your box fan daily (especially in a dusty room, near a window, or in a workshop), don’t push it past four weeks. A quick wipe takes five minutes. Take the grille off if you can, vacuum the blades, and hit the grille with a damp cloth. Dry everything before reassembling, or you’ll just attract more dust.

Letting it go all season? You’re basically running a dust mop with a motor. The motor works harder, runs hotter, and shortens the fan’s life. A once-a-month habit is cheap maintenance.
