Monthly cleanouts are non-negotiable.

The only way to keep a hanging organizer from turning into a black hole is to empty it completely at least once a month.

Out of sight really is out of mind, and that’s the problem. You keep shoving things in because the pockets hide the mess. Before you know it, the door won’t close properly and you’re afraid to open it because crap might fall out.

Set a calendar reminder. On that day, dump every pocket onto the bed or floor. Sort into keep, relocate, and trash. Put back only what actually belongs there. This takes 10 minutes. Skip it and you’re back to overstuffed in two weeks.

Also help yourself by limiting what goes in there. No “miscellaneous” pockets. Each slot should have a purpose — keys, mail, dog leash, whatever. If you’re labeling over things, you’ve already lost.

Oh, and check the weight. Those hooks and doors have limits. If the organizer is sagging, you’re past the maintenance stage — you need to unload first.

Otherwise you’re just creating a junk drawer that hangs.
