The short answer: stick with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) products like Mosquito Bits for standing water, and use permethrin-treated clothing or gear for personal protection. Avoid foggers, sprays with pyrethroids, and anything labeled “broad spectrum” near animals.

The problem with most mosquito control is that the stuff that kills mosquitoes also kills bees, fish, and can make your dog or horse sick. Pyrethroid-based foggers and yard sprays are the worst offenders — they’re neurotoxins to cats and fish, and even dogs can have reactions if they walk through wet grass afterward.

Bti is the exception. It’s a naturally occurring bacterium that only targets mosquito and black fly larvae. You can drop Mosquito Bits or dunks into water troughs, rain barrels, or ponds and it won’t hurt your dog drinking from it, your chickens pecking at it, or the fish swimming in it. It’s safe for livestock because it’s not a chemical — it’s a biological control.

For keeping mosquitoes off you while you’re around animals: permethrin-treated clothing (like Insect Shield brand) works great and doesn’t contact your pets directly. Don’t spray permethrin on animals — it’s toxic to cats and can cause issues for horses in high concentrations. For direct animal protection, use products specifically formulated for them, like pyrethrin-free sprays for horses (look for citronella or geraniol blends).

If you need to fog a barn, do it when animals are out, ventilate thoroughly, and don’t bring them back until it’s bone dry. That’s the reality of chemical foggers — they don’t discriminate.

Your goal is target the larvae, protect yourself physically, and never ever fog an occupied space. Mosquito Bits in the water troughs will do more good than anything else.
