Most “dishwasher safe” lunch boxes are lying to you.

If your standard is that the whole thing — compartments, lid, seals — goes in the dishwasher and comes out fine, glass food storage beats every plastic bento box on the market.

Here’s the deal. The popular bento boxes (Bentgo, Sistema, Rubbermaid LunchBlox) say “dishwasher safe,” but read the fine print: top rack only. And even then, lids warp over time, the seals trap water, and the plastic eventually stains and holds onto smells. Stainless steel options like PlanetBox are worse — most of those are hand-wash only, straight from the manufacturer.

Glass is the honest answer. Pyrex Simply Store and Snapware Glasslock containers, lids included, genuinely survive the dishwasher without drama. They don’t stain, they don’t absorb last week’s curry smell, and you can get three-compartment glass meal-prep containers if you want actual bento-style separation. Downside is weight in the lunch bag, but they’re basically indestructible.

If you absolutely need a plastic bento box, Bentgo is the least bad option. Keep it on the top rack and expect the lids to get floppy after a year of washing.
