Most islands let you walk to the water.

Yes, on most islands you can walk right down to the water’s edge. Public access laws in places like Hawaii, the Caribbean, and many Mediterranean islands guarantee beach access below the high tide line. So if you’re talking about a popular tourist island, you’re almost certainly fine.

The exceptions are usually private resorts, military zones, or cliffs where erosion makes it dangerous. Some volcanic islands have steep banks that are fenced off for safety, and a few countries allow landowners to block beach access entirely. But those are the minority, not the rule.

If you have a specific island in mind, look up “beach access” or “public shoreline” for that place. Otherwise, pack your flip-flops and go.
