Most surge protector strips are fine — but check the rating.

Yes, if they have actual surge protection. A lot of cheap “surge protector” extension cords are just power strips with a light that makes you feel safe. They don’t do anything.

Look for a joule rating (1000+ for basic protection) and a clamping voltage under 400V. If the package doesn’t mention either, assume it’s a fancy extension cord, not a protector.

For a computer or TV, a decent surge protector from a known brand (Tripp Lite, APC, Belkin) costs $20-30 and is worth it. Don’t plug your $1000 TV into a $2 strip from the gas station.

Your TV doesn’t need a $200 protector, but don’t trust a $5 strip with anything you’d be sad to lose.
