The rubber or silicone base on most mousepads is a wear item. Every time you peel it up and reposition it, you’re flexing the material and letting in dust and crumbs. Over a year or two of daily use—especially on a desk that isn’t perfectly clean—the tackiness fades.
Moving it a lot accelerates the damage. If you’re the kind of person who slides their mousepad around to line up with your keyboard, you’ll notice it getting lazy faster. Heat and humidity also soften the grip compound and make it less sticky over time.
When it starts sliding around, just replace it. A good mousepad costs twenty bucks. Not worth fighting with.
