Move your paper off the desk surface
The easiest way to keep a clutter-free desk with both a monitor and paper is to never let paper rest on the desk surface. If it’s flat on the desk, it’s in your way and it’s going to pile up.
A monitor riser is the first move. Get one with enough clearance to slide a shallow tray or a notepad underneath. That gives you a dedicated home for the paper you’re actively using without taking up desk real estate. The monitor goes on top, the active document slides under.
For everything else — reference docs, invoices, to-do lists — use a vertical file organizer. The kind with slots that hold papers upright. Keeps them visible but not spread out. I use one of those mesh ones from IKEA that costs like eight bucks. Lives at the edge of the desk, out of the way.
The other trick: a paper tray or a magazine file for “done with this but need to keep it.” Put it on a shelf above the desk or in a drawer. If you don’t have a drawer, get a small desktop storage box. Anything that keeps flat surfaces clear.
One rule that works for me: every time you stand up, take one piece of paper with you and put it where it belongs. Keeps the desk from becoming a landfill by end of day.
A little discipline beats a bigger desk every time.
