Nick Mason's Classic Car Collection: More Than a Hobby

Nick Mason’s car collection is one of the largest and most significant in private hands—he owns over 40 vehicles, many of them rare racing Ferraris and Maseratis. His garage famously includes a Ferrari 250 GTO (one of only 36), a 1954 Maserati 250F, and a Lotus 49 Formula 1 car. Mason even raced many of them in historic events like the Le Mans Classic and the Mille Miglia, treating the collection as a living, driving archive rather than a static museum.

His passion became a personal trademark early on. During Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon era, he would arrive at recording sessions in his Porsche 911 or a Lamborghini Miura, and the press often ran photos of Mason behind the wheel. He later co-wrote the book Into the Red (with photographer Simon Mills) and filmed a series of videos about his cars. Unlike many rock stars who buy supercars for flash, Mason’s obsession is mechanical and historical—he once said, “I’ve never thought of them as investments; they’re just toys that I love to play with.”
