Nut-free lunches don't have to be sad

Nut-free lunches don’t have to be sad — hummus and sun butter have you covered.

The whole “nut-free classroom” panic is mostly about spreads. Once you swap peanut butter for sunflower seed butter or soy butter, the world opens back up. Hummus, cream cheese, shredded chicken, egg salad, cheese and crackers — none of those have nuts, and all of them beat a sad cheese sandwich.

If you want the lunch to feel special, stop obsessing over the main event and go wild on the sides. Cookie-cutter sandwiches into stars or dinosaurs. Send fruit skewers instead of sliced apples. Throw in a tiny container of ranch or yogurt dip so they have something to dunk. Kids think dips are a party.

One real gotcha: don’t assume a product is safe just because it doesn’t list peanuts. Lots of granola bars, trail mixes, and baked goods “may contain” nuts. Read the label like you’re checking for poison, because for some kid, you literally are.

Also, tell your kid what they have. A child who’s scared they’ll eat something dangerous will skip lunch. Explain what’s in the box and why it’s safe. That’s worth more than any bento box.

Future You gets to skip the morning panic, and that’s a packed win.
