Oil Beats Scrubbing for Turmeric and Tomato Stains
Turmeric and tomato stains come out best with oil—not scrubbing, not bleach.
Both stains are oil-soluble pigments. Curcumin (turmeric) and lycopene (tomato) don’t dissolve in water, so no amount of soap-and-scrubbing will lift them. The grease in your kitchen cabinet will, though. Put a little cooking oil on a paper towel or right in the container, rub it into the stain, let it sit for a couple minutes, then wash normally with dish soap. The oil dissolves the pigment, and the soap washes the oil away.
Silicone is more porous, so it holds onto the color a bit longer. Same trick works, just give the oil 10–15 minutes to soak in. If it’s still faint, sunlight is the backup: dampen the container and leave it in direct sun for a few hours. UV breaks down curcumin fast—this is also why your old spice-stained Tupperware has that magic fade.
Skip the aggressive baking soda paste. It’s fine as a gentle abrasive, but hard scrubbing scratches plastic, and scratches become permanent little stain magnets.
Give the oil five minutes before you reach for the scrub brush.
