One pair per type, one organizer per door
The easiest way to declutter a small shoe collection is to enforce a one-pair-per-type rule and stick them in an over-the-door organizer. That’s it. That’s the whole system.
Let me explain why this works so well. Most people own shoes because they buy duplicates of the same category — three pairs of sneakers that all look the same, two loafers you never wear, sandals you forgot you had. The one-pair-per-type rule forces you to pick your favorite. If you have a casual sneaker, a dress shoe, a boot, a sandal, and maybe a workout shoe, that’s five pairs. That’s plenty.
The over-the-door organizer is the perfect companion because it keeps shoes visible and off the floor. No digging through a closet pile, no forgetting what you own. Each pocket holds one pair, so you physically cannot exceed your limit. Plus, it’s cheap, takes five minutes to install, and works in apartments or dorms where you can’t drill holes.
Be honest with yourself about what types you actually need. If you WFH and never wear dress shoes, don’t keep them “just in case.” That’s not a type you need. And yes, this means you might have to get rid of some shoes. Donate them. Future you will appreciate knowing exactly which shoe to grab.
Your floor will thank you.
