One turnover per day is all you need.
Yes. Divide your pool’s volume (in gallons) by your pump’s flow rate (in gallons per hour) to get the hours needed for one full turnover.
The math is straightforward:
- Pool volume — For a rectangular pool: length x width x average depth x 7.5. For irregular shapes, use an online calculator.
- Pump flow rate — Check the pump label or manual. It’s usually given in GPH (gallons per hour) or GPM (multiply GPM by 60). Note: that’s theoretical max; you lose some to friction and filter resistance, so I’d add 10-20%.
- Divide — Pool gallons ÷ pump GPH = hours for one turnover.
That’s your target run time. Most pools need 6-10 hours in summer, less in cooler weather or with a variable-speed pump running longer at lower speed. If the water looks cloudy or you swim a lot, bump it up an hour or two.
Don’t overthink it — one turnover per day keeps things clean without wasting electricity.
