Over-the-door racks are easier to maintain than hanging shoe organizers, especially in a small closet.

Hanging organizers look tidy at first, but they sag. The fabric pockets stretch, shoes slide out, and you end up playing 52-pickup every time you grab a pair. In a small closet, that chaos is amplified because you bump into it constantly. And trying to put a sneaker back into a floppy pocket one-handed? Annoying.

Over-the-door racks keep their shape. Wire or plastic pockets stay open, so shoes slide in and out without wrestling. They’re also easier to clean—wipe a damp cloth across the bars and you’re done. Hanging organizers trap dust and dirt in the fabric, and good luck washing them without wrecking the thing.

The one catch: over-the-door racks can block closet hinges or stick out a bit. But that’s a setup issue,
