Overhead is the only real solution for extension cords in a workshop.
Floor-level fixes like tape, cord covers, or cable ramps are temporary at best. In a workshop, you’re moving around, dragging tools, and inevitably you’ll catch a edge or forget a cord is there. Even heavy-duty cord covers become tripping zones if you’re not paying attention.
The best way to prevent tripping is to keep cords off the floor entirely. Run them along the ceiling or walls using hooks, clips, or a retractable reel mounted overhead. Let the cord drop straight down to your tool when you need it, then reel it back up when you’re done. No cord on the floor means no tripping hazard, period.
Cord covers work for temporary setups where overhead isn’t possible (like a garage sale), but in a dedicated workshop, overhead is the standard. Spend the hour installing hooks or a reel. Your ankles will thank you.
