Pack a snack box, not a meal
For irregular shift hours, the smartest move is packing a bunch of grab-and-go components instead of one sit-down meal.
You don’t know when you’ll actually get a break, or how long it’ll be. A single hot meal that has to be eaten at 2pm is a hostage situation. A box of parts — boiled eggs, cheese, crackers, grapes, pepperoni, hummus, almonds — works at 11am, 7pm, or whenever the floor finally goes quiet.
The one rule that matters: don’t rely on a microwave. You won’t always have one, and sharing one with the whole night crew is brutal. Cold pasta, potato salad, grain bowls, wraps, or thermos food like soup and chili all hold up over a ten-hour window without going sad. Skip mayo-heavy stuff and raw fish if it might sit for hours.
Also, pack for the longest shift you might work, not the shortest. Getting held over is standard. If you planned for six hours and it turns into ten, the vending machine wins. Toss in an extra protein bar or a bag of nuts so you’re never forced into a chip run.
Future You at 3am deserves better than a vending machine.
